Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Film has always been an essential tool in the preservation and dissemination of cultural values. In societies where oral traditions and cultural practices are predominant, cinema serves as a dynamic medium to document, share, and ensure the continuity of these traditions. Nguru Local Government Area in Yobe State, with its rich cultural heritage, has seen a growing interest in using film as a tool for cultural preservation (Baba & Musa, 2023). Traditional leaders in this area have historically been the custodians of cultural practices, including music, dance, folklore, and religious ceremonies. However, with modernization and the influx of foreign media content, there is a growing concern about the erosion of these traditional values. Filmmaking, as a modern tool, provides a unique opportunity to showcase and preserve these cultural practices for future generations. This study aims to explore how traditional leaders in Nguru Local Government Area are using films to document and promote the preservation of local cultural heritage, and to assess the impact of this practice on the community’s cultural identity.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of cultural preservation, traditional leaders in many parts of Nigeria face significant challenges in safeguarding their communities' heritage amidst the pressures of globalization and modernity. In Nguru Local Government Area, this challenge is compounded by limited access to formal education and modern communication technologies, which often leaves traditional knowledge vulnerable to extinction (Usman & Aliyu, 2023). While some community leaders have attempted to harness the power of film to document and promote cultural practices, there remains a gap in research on how effective this medium is in fostering cultural preservation. It is crucial to assess the role of film not just as a documentary tool, but also as a means of influencing younger generations, promoting pride in their heritage, and inspiring active participation in cultural preservation efforts. This study will examine whether films produced by or in collaboration with traditional leaders contribute to cultural continuity or merely act as representations of a fading tradition.

By focusing on Nguru Local Government Area, the study provides insights into the practical applications of film as a cultural tool. It will contribute to ongoing efforts to integrate modern media with traditional practices and offer valuable information to cultural policymakers, filmmakers, and community leaders seeking innovative ways to preserve heritage.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
